Melin Maengwyn - Gaerwen

Melin Maengwyn windmill stands on a grassy hill commanding some excellent views across Anglesey and over towards the stunning mountains of Snowdonia.

Situated just behind some houses which which front the A5 road, next to the now flattened Little Chef diner not long after you enter the village of Gaerwen from the Llanfairpwll end.

Melin Maengwyn seems to have been built in the early nineteenth part of the century as there is still the date of 1802 inscribed into a slate plaque which is above the north facing doorway.

Like many windmills on Anglesey, the demise of Melin Maengwyn was decided by the weather. Records state that just after the First World War during a severe storm, lightening struck the “endless chain” fusing it and then the gale force winds toppled the cap so the sail ribs could no longer turn.

The remains of the mill are in not to bad a condition today considering its age. There is a gaping hole in the northern side of the mill which now seems to be used as a shelter for life stock.
