Melin Y Bont Windmill - Llanfaelog

The Melin y Bont windmill, also known as Melin Isaf (lower mill) is one of two mills in Llanfaelog near Rhosneigr. This is another Anglesey windmill that has been restored, albeit without it’s sails. Also built around 1825, a popular period for windmills to be built on Anglesey.

Dual Power Mill - Wind and Water

This mill was very special in the fact that is used dual power, it could utilise the wind with the sails on top, but also in the lower section of the mill it used a water wheel, both were connected via machinery to the millstones, so the miller had a choice of which power to use in order to grind the stones.

The mill worked using the dual power system for 105 years until about 1930, when the sails were removed, but it continued to use the water wheel for several more years. Unfortunately in 1973, the mill was destroyed by a fire. The mill received a grant from CADW which enabled the mill to be restored and is now a holiday home.
