Criccieth Beach

Criccieth is lucky enough to have two beautiful beaches, one either side of its historic Castle. Both are popular with relatively easy access and local amenities are fairly close by for both.

Traeth Y Promenade

Traeth Y Promenade also known as East beach is probably the more popular of the two, mainly as its easier to access and better parking.

This beach is a long and crescent shaped and in some parts both sandy and shingle. The long promenade runs along the back of this beach and has a decent amount of pay and display parking, with plenty of disabled of parking bays available too. If that is full there is another large pay and display car park at the Porthmadog end just before Dylans.

The Western end of the beach, nearest the majestic Castle comprises of pebbles and shingle and can offer more shelter from the prevailing Westerly winds as it is under the lee of the headland with the castle on it.

The water quality along this beach is regarded as very and has been awarded the Blue Flag.

The lifeboat station at Criccieth

Criccieth Lifeboat

The seaside town of Criccieth is fortunate to have its own lifeboat station.

The lifeboat station here was established in 1853 by the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners’ Royal Benevolent Society.

In 1931 the station closed when a new larger motor lifeboat was stationed some 7 miles up the coast at Pwllheli when it was thought it would be able to cover more of Cardigan Bay, but when five people including four school boys drowned in September 1951 the station at Criccieth was reopened.

West Beach

West beach is on the Western side of the castle and although a pretty beach it doesn’t have the same quantity of parking and amenities as the East beach on the other side of the castle.

The upper part of the beach comprises of smooth round pebbles, then as the beach slopes down it becomes more sandy.

Access to the beach is down a very gradual set of steps.

There is some parking adjacent to the road and there a small pay and display car park at the Pwllheli end which holds about 16 cars.
