South Stack is situated on the North Western side of Anglesey, South Stack or Ynys Lawd as it is also known, is an Island just around the corner from Holyhead, which is on Holy Island which is joined to the Isle of Anglesey.
It is not just South Stack Lighthouse that makes this very beautiful area famous, but the cliffs around South Stack are also famous for around 4,000 nesting guillemot’s, puffins, choughs and razor bills to name but a few birds which habit the surrounding cliffs.
South Stack Lighthouse
The first lighthouse at South Stack was built in 1809 and cost £12,000.
The lamp in the lighthouse has been changed many times over the years, but in 1938 the lamp in the lighthouse was electrified.
The island of South Stack is a very important landmark for ships sailing to and from Liverpool, and as an aid to navigation.
On 12th September, 1984 South Stack Lighthouse was automated and the last of the lighthouse keepers were retired from there.
The lighthouse is now controlled from the Trinity House Control Centre in Harwich, Essex.
