Cob Malltraeth Cob
The Cob at Malltraeth was built in the early 1800’s to drain and protect the Cefni Saltmarsh. The construction of the original Cob was authorised by parliament in 1790, but it only survived a few years before it was breached in two places after a bad storm which also coincided with a big tide.
In 1812 the Cob was rebuilt and played in important role in helping to drain the Cefni saltmarsh which previously was exposed to the tide. During the middle ages this area was tidal and the sea would come in as far as Llangefni and Ceint.
As you stand on the Cob at Malltraeth and look up river, the whole of that area was once a marsh and is now a great example of land reclamation.
This area is an incredibly beautiful area of Anglesey with so much nature and wildlife to see with very little effort.
Anglesey Coastal Path
The Anglesey Coastal Path which circumnavigates most of the coastline of Anglesey passes through this beautiful area of Anglesey.
Section 9 of the coastal path (Llyn Rhos Du to Malltraeth) passes through Newborough Forest, along the Cob and ends in Malltraeth. The map for this section can be viewed here
Nature Reserve
The estuary to the seaward side of the Cob, the lagoons behind the Cob and the large area around the Afon Cefni is a fantastic place for many types of birds and wildlife.
Beautiful birds like Swans and Little Egrets can be seen in and around these lagoons.
The habitat of Cors Ddyga on the eastern side of Afon Cefni has been reverted to wetlands and reeds. The wetland reserve is officially called RSPB Cors Ddyga. It consists of marshy grasslands, lakes and pools.
Lon Las Cefni Cycle Route
This beautiful route of the National Cycle Network starts at Malltraeth and depending on your level of fitness you can cycle all the way to Llangefni.
Or alternatively you can park at Malltraeth and cycle in the other direction over the Cob at Malltraeth and through the beautiful Newborough Forest.
